Discovering landscape architecture as a satisfying career choice just got a little easier, thanks to a new collaboration between the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and 28 real estate industry organizations. The collaboration highlights landscape architecture and other diverse career paths within the real estate sector.
WAF will reconvene for its eleventh edition in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 28-30 November this year. This is the first time the event has been hosted in the Dutch capital, following previous editions in Barcelona, Singapore and Berlin. The 2018 awards program received more than 1,000 entries for the first time, with numbers up 20 per cent compared with 2017. Architects and designers generated 536 shortlisted entries across 81 countries.
In partnership with Make Architects and Sir John Soane’s Museum, the World Architecture Festival (WAF) has announced the call for entries for the second edition of The Architecture Drawing Prize. Launched in 2017, the prize is conceived to celebrate and showcase the significance of drawing as a tool in capturing and communicating architectural ideas.
In June, the commercial component of the Momentum Index moved 1.1% higher, while the institutional component eked out a 0.3% gain. June’s advance marks the fifth straight monthly increase for the Momentum Index, which is now nearing a ten-year high, and suggests that the moderate strengthening of construction activity currently underway will continue through the end of 2018.
INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, the leading global interior design and architecture awards program, has announced the shortlist of 77 projects that will compete to be crowned World Interior of the Year 2018. Projects from across the globe were entered across nine diverse categories, ranging from health and educational buildings to hotels, bars and restaurants, and residential homes.
“Our cities are evolving into places that are more diverse and more interesting than ever, with a mix of neighborhoods defined by distinct characteristics that are drawing different residents and workers for different reasons,” said ULI Terwilliger Center Founder and Chairman J. Ronald Terwilliger. “There are very few urban areas in which housing is not mixed in or very close to commercial uses. This has significant implications for development going forward – particularly affordable housing — in terms of building cities that are livable and attainable to people in a broad income range.”
The shortlist of projects for the 2018 World Architecture Festival (WAF) were recently announced and two Stantec Architecture projects—Cambridge Memorial Hospital Redevelopment and the University of Lethbridge Science and Academic Building (designed with KPMB Architects) have been selected for presentation from more than 1,100 entries representing 81 countries.
“We believe that every building, especially homes, should be green. LEED certified homes enhance the health and wellbeing of occupants by providing clean indoor air and incorporating safe building materials to ensure comfort and safety, and they are designed to save critical resources, use less energy and water and save money,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “The LEED Homes Awards showcase the most inspired and efficient practices in the residential green building movement. These leaders showcase what it means to create a home that balances aesthetic appeal with real human and environmental needs.”
At a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $783.6 billion, new construction starts in May advanced 15% from April, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. The increase follows a 12% decline in April, and shows total construction activity reaching the highest level reported over the past eight months. The lift in May came from substantial gains for nonbuilding construction, up 39%; and nonresidential building, up 18%; as both sectors benefited from the start of several very large projects.
