Brick Industry Association (BIA) member manufacturers report 2021 trends for residential and commercial exteriors and interiors. Commercial design trends include thoughtfully placed negative space as a key role of functionality; heavy textured/cut and roll back brick with character; timeless traditional design; herringbone accents and interior open spaces with sharp lines, raw materials and a monochromatic color palette.
Total construction starts rose 2% in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $825.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. A solid gain in nonresidential building starts fueled the March gain, while growth in residential starts was minuscule and nonbuilding starts fell outright.
Dodge Data & Analytics (“Dodge”) and The Blue Book Building & Construction Network (“The Blue Book”) announced that they are combining their businesses in a merger. The combination will result in the Dodge | Blue Book Construction Industry Database, containing more than 10 billion data elements and comprising the most complete, up-to-date and accurate information about projects, people, firms and products in the industry.
The Dodge Momentum Index, issued by Dodge Data & Analytics, moved 1.7% higher in March to 151.4 from the revised February reading of 148.8. According to the March data, the Index hit its highest level since the summer of 2018 as a result of an increase in institutional projects that entered the planning stage, and which came on the heels of a similar gain for the sector in February. While healthcare and lab projects continue to dominate institutional planning, March saw a more broad-based selection of project types including education and recreation buildings.

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) announces the release of the 2021 edition of the ANSI/CRRC S100 standard (formerly the CRRC-1 Standard), which received approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on March 29, 2021. The ANSI/CRRC S100 standard is an American National Standard that provides a consistent reference in building energy codes and voluntary green building programs—such as the International Energy Conservation Code, ASHRAE 90.1, and the International Green Construction Code—regarding the measurement of the surface radiative properties of roofing materials.
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) announced today that it has seated a Consensus Body for Existing Buildings for its American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved consensus process that will develop BSR/GBI 02-202x, Green Globes Assessment Protocol for Existing Buildings (new standard).
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released an updated version of a document pertaining to roller assemblies, with or without height adjustment features, for use in sliding doors and lift and slide doors. AAMA 906-21, “Specification for Sliding Door and Lift and Slide Roller Assemblies,” was last updated in 2018.
