The Kenaitze Indian Tribe recently broke ground on its newest education center in Kenai, Alaska. The center focuses on the Tribal Council’s commitment to building a tribal-owned, culturally appropriate education campus that consolidates core educational components and programs in one state-of-the-art, central facility. Design of the educational center is being led by a local team of architects and engineers from the Anchorage office of Stantec. Blazy Construction is the general contractor.

In April 2020, Salt Lake City’s Fire Station No. 14 earned LEED Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy-efficient, environmentally responsible design and construction. When it opened in 2018, it was one of the first net-zero-energy (NZE) fire stations in the country, meaning it generates more energy than it consumes. Helping achieve the building’s performance goals, Tubelite Inc.’s triple-glazed thermal curtainwall, multi-pane storefront and interior framing systems were installed by Mollerup Glass Co.

Wichita’s Advanced Learning Library (ALL) in Kansas is the city’s newest and largest public library, replacing the old downtown branch. According to Rockfon’s Optimized Acoustics™ design approach, the first step to optimal acoustics in any space is to assess the amount of sound absorption needed from the ceiling based on the likelihood of noise and the sensitivity of the occupants’ activities to noise. “In a modern public library, there can be high noise levels at the same time that many people need to concentrate,” continued Madaras. “In the case of the ALL, the ceilings had to provide the best level of sound absorption as possible, an NRC of 0.90 or higher.”

Yuba Water Agency Board hires DLR Group for master plan

The Yuba Water Agency Board of Yuba County, Calif., has selected DLR Group for visioning and master planning services to develop a modern, sustainable, and interactive Water Education Center. The new facility will be part of the Yuba Watershed Experience, an initiative to educate local students and patrons about the impact of the Yuba River watershed on the environment, flooding, water supply, and more, and subsequently, the impact to the community.

Children’s Institute (CII), the social impact organization dedicated to transforming the lives of children exposed to adversity and poverty in Los Angeles, announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for their new Watts campus will take place on Thursday, January 30 at 11am. Designed pro bono by architect Frank Gehry, the ceremony celebrates the beginning of construction on the $20 million project at the corner of E. 102nd Street and Success Avenue in Watts.

Cultural and Health Center buildings in Shanghai have topped out

Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the Shanghai Cofco Cultural and Health Center has topped out. The project aims at being a social condenser, fostering community among the residents of the surrounding new housing blocks with a public space and park along an existing canal. While the adjacent housing blocks are repetitive, here the architecture is of spatial energy and openness, inviting the whole community in for recreational and cultural programs.

Solarban® 72 Acuity® solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) and low-iron glass by Vitro Glass will be installed in insulating glass units (IGUs) on all four sides of the structure. The IGUs will be fabricated with Walker Glass’ AviProtek® E acid-etched bird-safe glass (Pattern 213) on the first (outdoor-facing) surface.
