Three new US patents for Solidia Technologies’ CO2-cured concrete advances the performance and sustainability of building materials

Solidia’s patented processes start with an energy-saving, sustainable cement. Concrete made with this cement is then cured with CO2 instead of water. Together, the sustainable cement and CO2-cured concrete reduce the carbon footprint of cement and concrete by up to 70%. Additionally, up to 100% of the water used in concrete production can be recovered and recycled.

The Portland Cement Association releases new report on the value of resilient design and construction

The Portland Cement Association (PCA), representing America’s cement manufacturers, released a new report focused on resiliency titled The Real Value of Resilient Construction. The report demonstrates through historical data, evidence from external sources, and comparisons of building materials that resilient design and construction built with concrete leads to longer lasting buildings due to concrete’s ability to stand up to normal wear and tear and resistance to extreme weather events.

MBH Architects honors Eucalyptus trees in design of 225 California Drive

As an emblematic representation of Burlingame and a recognizable call-out of the natural beauty of the Bay Area, MBH Architects wanted to honor the City of Trees, making Eucalyptus trees a prominent thematic feature of the 225 California Drive. 225 California Drive was built to LEED Gold specification requirements, and the materials used for its exterior contain 15 percent of recycled content as well as 45 percent of regional materials—mostly accounted from the concrete that the project used.

St. Pius Chapel and Prayer Garden in New Orleans designed by Eskew+Dumez+Ripple as sanctuary for quiet, individual prayer

The new chapel is a delicately-placed, quiet counterpoint to the adjacent church, contrasting in scale but similar in form and material. The tall, angled shape of the chapel ties the building to its neighbor and creates a soaring space for worshippers within—a cathedral for one. The sculpted form is carefully carved on two sides and at the roof, allowing light to leak in from above the ceiling, along the floor, and adjacent to the sacred tabernacle.

Randall W. Poston elected president of American Concrete Institute

Randall W. Poston has been elected to serve as president of the American Concrete Institute for 2019-2020, Cary S. Kopczynski has been elected ACI vice president for a two-year term, and Jeffrey W. Coleman is now the Institute’s senior vice president, which is also a two-year term. Additionally, four members have been elected to serve on the ACI Board of Direction, each for three-year terms: Walter H. Flood IV, Maria G. Juenger, Michael E. Kreger, and Ishita Manjrekar.
