Western Specialty Contractors restores open-air St. Andrew by the Sea Catholic Church in North Padre Island, Texas

The Diocese of Corpus Christi contacted the concrete restoration experts at Western Specialty Contractors – San Antonio, TX Branch to restore the church to its original beauty and integrity, and to protect and extend its service life. The church had numerous chips, cracks and spalls on the concrete pews, under the roof structure and around repair patches. Every structural beam and column within the pavilion also needed repair, as well as a wooden cross and bell tower at the top of the church.

UCSF Mission Hall Global Health Sciences Building

The new 266,000-sq. ft. mission hall global health sciences building at the University of California, San Francisco, is a defining project for the growing Mission Bay campus. In an effort to create stronger links between academic disciplines and campus sectors, the new building was envisioned as a “gateway,” organized around a series of interior and exterior spaces that offer a flexible, changeable, and visible center for collaboration and campus access. Design guidelines established by the owner informed the massing and basic organization of the building, calling for simple volumes, consistent building heights and a base, body, and parapet tripartite organization, explains Moses Vaughan, of WRNS Studio in San Francisco, the architect on the project.

High-performance composites bridge offers cost-effective, rapid solution for rural Tennessee community

Morgan County Highway Superintendent Joe Henry Miller and county officials are partnering with private industry and researchers at the University of Tennessee (UT) and the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, or IACMI—The Composites Institute®, in Knoxville to create an affordable bridge that can be installed quickly and will safely meet transportation needs in the rural community.  “As part of our objectives for sustainability and strategic planning, our goal in this demonstration is to develop a comprehensive case study for comparing the total costs of a typical concrete bridge and one using an FRP bridge deck. We will share the case study framework and results with federal, state and local officials, transportation departments and the civil engineering community so FRP composites will be more of a ‘known’ to them,” said John Unser, IACMI technology impact manager.

Florida adopts ACI Concrete Repair Code

The seventh edition of the Florida Building Code (FBC) was recently released for review and now references the American Concrete Institute’s, ACI 562-19 Code Requirements for the Assessment, Repair and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures. The code change establishes minimum requirements for the design, construction, repair, and rehabilitation of concrete structural elements in buildings for various levels of desired performance as deemed appropriate for the project.  In addition to improved life safety, the requirements clearly define objectives and anticipated performance for the code official, owners, designers, contractors, and installers.
