thyssenkrupp Elevator completes construction on core of the highest test tower in the Western Hemisphere

Slip-form construction of thyssenkrupp Elevator’s Innovation and Qualification Center (IQC) and elevator test tower has been completed. The IQC is part of thyssenkrupp Elevator’s new North American headquarters at The Battery Atlanta and, at 420 feet tall, will be the tallest building in Cobb County as well as the tallest elevator test tower in the Western Hemisphere.

In Memoriam: Edward K. Rice

Edward K. Rice, founder and Honorary Chairman of CTS Cement Manufacturing Co, passed away May 9 in his Los Angeles home. Ed’s innovative work on cement and concrete led him to receive many industry awards. In 2013, he received an Honorary Membership in the ASTM C01 Committee on Cement. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute. He was elected as an inaugural member of the Hall of Fame of the Post-Tensioning Institute (Legends of Post-Tensioning) in 2005.

Compass Datacenters announces use of CarbonCure™ Concrete

Compass Datacenters, LLC announced today its data centers will be built with concrete using CarbonCure technology. Developed by Nova Scotia-based CarbonCure Technologies, the procedure injects re-captured industrial CO2 into the concrete manufacturing process, dramatically reducing the volume of cement required in the mixing of concrete while also permanently removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

ACI Foundation funds research projects

The ACI Foundation’s Concrete Research Council (CRC) selected eight research projects to receive grants this year. CRC seeks concrete research projects that further the knowledge and sustainability of concrete materials, construction, and structures in coordination with ACI Committees where possible. CRC recommended these eight projects for funding, based on impact to industry, ACI Committee engagement and collaboration with other funders and organizations.
