The Merriman Anderson/Architects-designed renovation of the historic Great Southwest Building in Houston opens as Cambria Hotel

The historic Great Southwest Building, a former office building in downtown Houston, has completed its redevelopment into a Cambria Hotel. Merriman Anderson/Architects (MAA) is the architect and interior designer for the renovations. The building features a number of art deco elements mixed with a touch of Mayan influence. Driven by the building’s history and refined culture, the design uses a neutral architectural envelope to allow historic details and newly added architectural elements to come to life.

The final steel beam was raised Thursday on Philadelphia’s new Hyatt Centric hotel, one of the newest properties in the lifestyle hotel brand’s international portfolio. BBGM-designed Draftsman Hotel pays tribute to the past, present and future in Charlottesville, Va.

Looking to create a contemporary hotel while honoring the city’s history, BBGM integrated a balance of contemporary materials with traditional proportions into the Draftsman Hotel. The podium features rust colored Trespa panels – a high pressure laminate siding – reminiscent of the neighboring red brick buildings. Transitioning the material of the facade above the podium to a contemporary Nichiha fiber cement helps to visually detach this element, lessening the visual impact of the hotel on the street’s architecture.

Above the podium, a 37-story sleek glass tower rises, capturing views of the city and the Cumberland River for the building’s occupants. The fenestration and balcony composition continue the acoustic guitar design conceit; the tower elegantly recalls the fretted neck of the instrument. Amenity decks—one for hotel guests and one for residents—provide a private outdoor experience above the busy street. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.

“The architectural design thoughtfully marries traditional with modern and incorporates vintage brick veneer, wood, steel, and other materials that reference the local palate and setting,” said Sean Martino, director in KTGY’s Los Angeles office. “A special design element is the Krion façade system with translucent panels and integrated lighting, which will create a dynamic façade at the corner of Monterey Road and East 1st Street.”
