Society of Architectural Historians to present Change Agent Award to Diller Scofidio + Renfro

The award recognizes Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin for their innovative, paradigm-shifting work, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to design with a focus on cultural and civic projects. DS+R is currently working on the renovation and expansion of the Museum of Modern Art, in collaboration with Gensler, a project that increases gallery space by one third, optimizes current spaces to be more flexible and technologically sophisticated, and creates publicly accessible street-level galleries that connect the Museum to the people of midtown Manhattan.

Phelps Construction Group completes Statue of Liberty Museum

Phelps Construction Group has completed the new 26,000 square foot Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island. The poured in place concrete super structure sits above the 500-year flood level. It also includes the Statue of Liberty’s original torch surrounded by frameless glass curtainwalls. The multi-faceted three-dimensional structural steel roof system is clad with an expansive green roof complete with native vegetation and panoramic views of New York City.

Rooftop penetrations of newest Smithsonian museum installed with structural thermal breaks to protect artifacts, conserve energy

The National Museum of African American History and Culture provides a sensitive environment that balances energy efficiency and comfortable humidity levels against the need to protect priceless artifacts from the damaging effects of interior condensation. Sculptor uses Guardian Glass for MSU Broad exhibition

The Zaha Hadid-designed Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University features Guardian Glass on the façade and, now, on the inside as part of a new exhibition. Aspects of Tuazon’s works are inspired by inventor and engineer Steve Baer. The “water window” concept utilizes passive solar energy to store heat in water that is then released over time to heat the enclosed environment.

Noguchi Museum to create unified campus encompassing new art and archive building, Noguchi’s restored studio, and existing museum and garden

With the original Museum and sculpture garden established by the artist in 1985, the expanded campus will include a new 6,000-square-foot building to house the Museum’s collection and archive. It will also house Noguchi’s original 1959 studio building, which will be restored and open to the public for the first time.

Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates-designed Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London receives AIA’s Twenty-five Year Award

Architects Robert Venturi, FAIA, and Denise Scott Brown, FAIA—VSBA founding principals—sought to relate the new wing to the National Gallery while maintaining the wing’s own identity as a work of modern architecture. A play on Italian Mannerism, the Sainsbury Wing demonstrates the architects’ sophisticated but ironic acknowledgement of modern conditions while thoroughly exploring classical architecture’s conventions.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, announced that it has finished the second phase in its multi-year campus redevelopment plan with the completion of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Center for Conservation. The 39,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility by Lake|Flato Architects brings the Museum’s distinguished conservation teams together on the main campus for the first time, in one of the largest, continuous spaces for conservation of any public museum.

The 14-acre redevelopment is currently the largest cultural project under construction in North America.

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Officially Breaks Ground

With an iconic building designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the 300,000 square-foot non-profit museum will feature collection galleries and exhibition spaces displaying original works of art from world renowned artists, cutting-edge digital technologies and daily film screenings in two state-of-the-art theaters. It will also offer extraordinary educational opportunities with hands-on and digital classrooms and a free public research library for educators, scholars and students. Education will be a centerpiece of the Museum’s programming to provide diverse students of all ages the skills to voice their own stories and spark creativity. “The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be an architectural wonder, a cultural treasure, and a center of storytelling and creativity at the heart of a reimagined Exposition Park,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “I thank Mellody Hobson and George Lucas for their incredible generosity and vision, which will inspire countless Angelenos and visitors from around the world.”
