Kinestral Technologies, Inc. and Halio International, S.A. announced yesterday at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo that Avondzon, a 160-bed residential care center in Belgium, has installed Halio® smart-tinting glass.  Developed and manufactured by Kinestral, Halio was used for 132 skylights to create a “glass roof” that would deliver maximum daylight without sacrificing the comfort of residents and staff. Research has shown that seniors need three to five times more light than younger people because a lack of light stimuli can disrupt their biological clocks.

Sitting directly across from Virtua’s Health and Wellness Center, the 66,000-square-foot space was reimagined to promote a sense of hope, serenity, and healing, with high ceilings, windows that let in natural light, and vibrant artwork featuring scenes found in nature.

Soaring 115 feet above the floor, the renovated station’s Great Hall now features a two-tier skylight system: the original restored, 177-foot-long, barrel-vault system and a new, 187-foot long, high-performance system installed approximately five feet above it by Super Sky Products Enterprises LLC. Enhancing the durability and minimizing future maintenance, Linetec finished the new skylight’s aluminum framing in a Bone White, 70% PVDF resin-based architectural coating.

The new, 32-foot clear tilt-up LBA Promenade Warehouse building is comprised of 163,056 square feet, including 5,000 square feet of office space and a 2,500 square foot wood mezzanine. Ware Malcomb provided architecture and civil engineering services for the project. The shell of the building was designed using concrete tilt-up panels, concrete slab flooring, steel beams and trusses, and an aluminum storefront system.

VELUX Skylights released findings that depict modern society’s vanishing relationship with the natural environment. In the US, 63% of participants said they on average only spend one hour or less a day in nature, but 88% agreed they would like to spend more time. In addition, 71% of the US participants said they believe nature, daylight and fresh air have a positive impact on stress levels while 69% agreed that those factors have a positive impact on mental well-being. A separate study, commissioned by the VELUX Group and published by RAND Europe, finds emerging evidence for a positive association between nature and mental health.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) worked on behalf of its members during International Code Council (ICC) Committee Action Hearings (CAH) April 28-May 8 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. AAMA represented its members, working with other industry groups and interested individuals to take positive action on behalf of the fenestration industry.” AAMA was able to earn committee approval on a number of proposals which had failed to earn approval in previous code cycles,” said Kathy Krafka Harkema, AAMA Codes and Regulatory Affairs Manager. “Earning committee approval on code proposals is an important step in the ICC code development process. The next hurdle AAMA will work to clear is public comment hearing approval.”
