Abstract Text:
Cities across the country are dealing with combined sewer overflow issues related to unmanaged stormwater entering public sewers and exceeding the capacity of these systems resulting in the discharge of untreated wastewater into local rivers. Therefore, cities across the country are seeking innovative technology in green infrastructure to move away from using “grey”. Hassalo on Eighth provides one of the most comprehensive examples of integrated water management in the US. Located in the Central Business District of Portland, OR and constructed in 2015, Hassalo on Eighth is an urban redevelopment consisting of three new residential buildings and one existing office building spanning over 6-acres. The project site is served by an undersized combined sewer system. Therefore, early on managing stormwater onsite was a goal of the City of Portland. The City partnered with American Assets Trust, the project developer, building owner and manager, to establish a green infrastructure strategy – including green roofs, stormwater planters, green streets, rainwater harvesting in the form of a new urban stream and the nation’s largest natural organic recycling machine that processes 100% of wastewater on-site beyond those required by the city. This session will share the green infrastructure story of Hassalo on Eighth.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover how green infrastructure can help achieve city regulations consistent with LEED credits of,Water Efficiency, Sustainable Sites with Surface Water management, and Innovation with Black Water re-use.
- Understand how green Infrastructure can generate a return on investment for private developments while helping brand and position a project in a competitive market.
- Describe how partnerships between the public and private sector move innovative development projects forward using green infrastructure.
- Explain what operations and maintenance practices are required to install and maintain green infrastructure long term.
