181 Fremont Tower, with Vitro Glass, named San Francisco’s top building of decade

181 Fremont designed by Manus Heller Architects, a 57-story office and condominium tower sheathed in Solarban® 70 glass by Vitro Architectural Glass, was named San Francisco’s top building of the decade by the San Francisco Chronicle. Working with Hartung Glass Industries, Seattle, a member of the Vitro Certified™ Network of glass fabricators, Vitro Glass supplied more than 6,000 insulating glass units (IGUs), including hundreds of differently shaped triangles, gables and other shapes to Benson Industries, the building’s curtainwall designer, engineer and installer.

Registration opens for IMPACT 2020, Ed Begley Jr. announced as keynote

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), creators of the LEED green building rating system, announced that registration is now open for IMPACT 2020. The conference will be held May 5-6, 2020 at the LEED Platinum RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota, and features a keynote from actor, environmentalist and green building enthusiast Ed Begley, Jr. The IMPACT conference is the largest green building conference and expo in the Midwest and attracts building professionals, sustainability leaders and change makers from across the region.

Frank Gehry’s new landmark building for Children’s Institute to break ground tomorrow

Children’s Institute (CII), the social impact organization dedicated to transforming the lives of children exposed to adversity and poverty in Los Angeles, announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for their new Watts campus will take place on Thursday, January 30 at 11am. Designed pro bono by architect Frank Gehry, the ceremony celebrates the beginning of construction on the $20 million project at the corner of E. 102nd Street and Success Avenue in Watts.

FEMA strengthens construction standards for disaster recovery

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released an update, on December 20, 2019, to its Recovery Interim Policy FP-104-009-11, Consensus-Based Codes, Specifications and Standards for Public Assistance (Policy), Version 2.1, adding several International Codes (I-Codes), developed by the International Code Council, to the list of required Consensus-Based Codes, Specifications and Standards. The I-Codes requirements aim to advance national resiliency and reduce community risk before and after a disaster.
