The Bottling Department Food Hall in San Antonio, Texas

Originally constructed in 1894, a devastating fire claimed the historic Pearl Bottling House in 2003. Pearl salvaged as much from the rubble as possible, and hired Clayton & Little to rebuild the 13,132-square-foot structure as a modern interpretation of a lost Classical Revival jewel that would serve as a venue for emerging chefs and culinary talent. Pulling architectural cues from historic photos and drawings of the original building, decorative brick corbeling and stone arches reference the enchanting architecture of the 1890’s. A modified version of original wood truss design accommodates a cupola, spilling light into the hall below while acting as a nightly beacon that illuminates the surrounding complex.

Sustainable design featured at Mansueto High School in Chicago

With Mansueto High School, designed by Wheeler Kearns Architects, Noble Network of Charter Schools has transformed 5.5 acres of industrial brownfield in Chicago’s largest “park desert” into a place of great opportunity for its students. The 67,000-sq. ft. two-story school structure, with a dark brick exterior and a light, gray metal panel interior, wraps almost completely around a landscaped courtyard. The use of masonry anchors the building’s identity, replicating the historical context of the site, providing a sense of protection, and shielding interior functions from the traffic noise created along the busy industrial thoroughfare.

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has elected General Shale CEO Charles Smith as chairman effective January 1. Smith succeeds Brick Industry Association chairman Davis Henry, president, Henry Brick, Co, Selma, Alabama, who will remain as past chair. BIA’s membership also elected Joe Rice, CEO of Belden Tri-State Building Materials, New York, New York as vice chair; Jim Stradley, president of Cincinnati-based Division 4, Inc. as treasure; and Mark Ellenor, president of Glen-Gery Corp., Wyomissing, PA as new secretary.

Architecture, interiors and planning firm, FXCollaborative designed the interior spaces to cater to all future tenants. Each floor plan has a fluid connection to the outside with oversized windows, highlighting natural light and column-free floor plans which further supports space efficiency. Additionally, the exterior façade will feature unique dark blue glazed bricks.

Landmarks Illinois will celebrate restoration of Oscar Stanton De Priest Apartment Building on Martin Luther King Day

The restoration project at the De Priest building began in 2017 when Landmarks Illinois was awarded a $250,000 grant from the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Grant Program to carry out essential roof and masonry repairs. Landmarks Illinois contracted with local architecture firm Bauer Latoza Studios to serve as project manager to develop a restoration plan including roof replacement and needed masonry repairs. Through the work of Bruno’s Tuckpointing and Ridgeworth Roofing, the De Priest Apartment Building, constructed in 1920, is now water tight. The roof replacement included restoration of an original skylight over the stairwell.

Margulies Perruzzi completes Thomson Place retail activation project

Dating to the early part of the 20th century, the Thomson Place neighborhood was a booming industrial area of brick and beam warehouse buildings. Margulies Perruzzi’s design restored the building façades by opening bricked-up windows, reintroducing shutters on the upper level, and adding back long-forgotten architectural flourishes. The overall master plan respects the different proportions and architectural language of each building, and focuses activity on the new multi-use plaza adjacent to the buildings at 44 and 50 Thomson Place.

BIA extends deadline for 2019 Brick in Architecture Awards

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has extended the deadline for entries to November 7. Eligible projects include any work of architecture completed since January 1, 2014 in which new clay brick products comprise the predominant exterior building or paving material (over 50 percent) including: face or hollow brick, building brick, thin brick, paving brick, glazed brick, structural glazed facing tile, new clay brick products in special shapes and/or a combination of any of these aforementioned units.
