Known as a “net-zero” retail store, the Walgreens is equipped with solar panels, two wind turbines and a geothermal system to generate electricity. As part of the project, Walgreens also wanted to make the most of available natural light flowing through the windows and reduce the dependence on electric lighting. Since lighting accounts for nearly 40% of all of the electricity used in commercial buildings in the United States, achieving a “net-zero” facility typically requires a dedicated lighting strategy. “By applying 3M Daylight Redirecting Film, we were able to solve our primary goal of reducing glare, while simultaneously saving energy by increasing the area we could use for daylight harvesting,” Robbins added. “Our decisions on how to treat our west-facing curtain wall were critical in the overall look, feel and function of our net-zero design.”

Designs for the facility include a nutrition education center, gym, teen lounge, outdoor garden, auditorium, music and art studio, office space, intellectual commons, innovation center, and outdoor basketball and activity court. KAI Design & Build has been selected as the general contractor for the project, which is expected to open in time for the 2019-20 school year and is one of the first of its kind in the country. The design team led by HDR focused on creating a space that would cultivate collaboration and communication among its researchers, scientists and staff. The goal was to design an open and inviting environment full of natural light that would inspire as well as serve as a reflection of the positive medical advancements taking place at the center. Additionally, because of the hospital’s coastal location, there was a strong desire and need to meet Florida’s newly updated stringent hurricane impact resistance requirements. Minnesota-based specialty contractor, MG McGrath Architectural Glass & Glazing worked closely with YKK AP America Inc. to carefully choose the right, impact-resistant products for the project.
