KWK Architects transforms Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Transforming Bernard Becker Medical Library into an education service and technology hub was one of the initial steps in a five-year plan by Washington University School of Medicine to better integrate its St. Louis campus. The program, called Building Campus Connections, focuses on incorporating educational services, expanding clinical space, and improving research and service facilities while building a cohesive, collaborative environment. KWK Architects took the lead role in designing renovations to Becker Library’s basement, ground floor lobby entrance, and second through seventh levels.

UCI Medical Center Irvine awarded to Hensel Phelps + CO Architects design-build team

The University of California, Irvine, awarded the UCI Medical Center Irvine project to the Hensel Phelps + CO Architects design-build team. The new medical center embraces UCI’s commitment to sustainable design and construction, incorporating recycled water in the central plant and for irrigation, green power, and the preservation of the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve.

Silicon Valley landmark competition winner announced

Urban Confluence Silicon Valley announced that Breeze of Innovation, designed by Fernando Jerez and Belén Pérez de Juan of SMAR Architecture Studio, has been named winner of the worldwide open ideas competition for an iconic landmark in Silicon Valley. The competition jury, comprised of local, national, and international design and place-making experts, selected the winner from an impressive 963 submissions from 72 countries on six continents. Located at Arena Green at Guadalupe Park and Gardens in San José, the project is slated to go before the San José City Council in May 2021 for approval of the winning design.

Clark Construction breaks ground on Savannah Convention Center expansion

Clark Construction Group joined Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, representatives from the Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority (SGCCA), and city and state leaders last week to celebrate the start of construction on the much-anticipated Savannah Convention Center Expansion project. The groundbreaking marks a pivotal milestone in the project’s history, which began in 2017, when the Georgia General Assembly first approved the initial funding to begin design efforts in concert with Atlanta-based Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates (tvsdesign) and Savannah-based Hanson Architects –  the two firms that designed the original Convention Center.

Adolfson & Peterson Construction and Potter County break ground on new District Courts Building

Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP), a national construction management firm and general contractor, HOK Group Inc., a global architecture/engineering firm, and Potter County broke ground on the new District Courts Building in Amarillo, Texas. Designed by HOK, the five-story, 158,250-square-foot replacement building will include courtrooms, a jury assembly, county offices, courtroom in-custody holding and records storage. The new building will also feature security enhancements including separate sheriff’s access with a vehicle sally port for security and safety, as well as separate access for judges and other elected officials.

New series of modular housing solutions for homeless moves forward

KTGY Architecture + Planning has announced groundbreakings for a series of pioneering modular developments with the potential to transform housing for the chronically homeless. Working with the designer/builder team Hope Street Development Group – which also includes HBG Construction Corp and Aedis Real Estate Group – KTGY assists in alleviating Los Angeles’ homeless crisis using advanced, highly replicable modular design. The set of three buildings, with more to come, may be the largest modular housing series in Los Angeles.

Cloud 9 Medi-Spa, a new luxury medical skincare clinic in Southern California’s burgeoning Inland Empire, wanted to project an image of elegance, epitomized by the crystal chandeliers in its reception area. Instead of the usual flat ceiling tiles, they installed decorative ceilings made of three-dimensional Ceilume thermoformed panels.
