New Relic is a rapidly growing San Francisco based digital intelligence company. For their new space, New Relic sought to capture its innovative culture in a unique office design, while exploring new ways of working in anticipation of company growth. They approached M Moser SF to help them develop this vision and find innovative solutions specific to their needs.

Through engaged exploration with the client, our design team realized there were many existing perspectives on the company’s cultural identity and how this identity has evolved over time. Reflecting this dynamic culture and capturing that spirit of innovation and evolution in the space was the driving factor in the design of New Relic’s workplace.

Finding synergy between aesthetic and cost-driven decision-making, we proposed utilizing existing rooms, as well as creating new spaces, to design a dynamic expression that was a departure from the current form. The resulting solution is an energized new space that, through folding planes of color and wood, reflects the evolving culture of the company. Each floor maximizes the form of the prior build-out, while still generating a unique expression of each space with a consistent design language throughout.

At the heart of each floor is a vibrant kitchenette, which connects the workspace with social and collaboration amenities while providing additional work destinations. These zones were critical to maintain sharing and comradery amidst New Relic’s growing teams. To support focus work, an extensive number of phone rooms and private nooks were added adjacent to the open workspace. These flexible spaces support various modes of working for their growing mobile staff, as well as being integral to non-mobile teams in the open office. ‘Mobility hubs’ are tucked away for deeper focus with communal tables, booths, and lounge seating to provide reliable destinations for longer-term working.

From a design perspective, it was important to make mobile areas just as appealing as permanent desks to promote the growing mobile program and create a cohesive design to support a variety of workstyles. M Moser helped the client understand how they could distribute both traditional workstations and mobile work areas to seamlessly integrate mobile and flexible work as a central component of the new office design.
