Leeza SOHO opens with the world’s tallest atrium

Straddling an underground subway service tunnel, Zaha Hadid Architects-designed Leeza SOHO tower divides its volume into two halves enclosed by a single facade shell. The emerging space between these two halves extends the full height of the tower, creating the world’s tallest atrium at 194.15 m which rotates through the building as the tower rises to realign the upper floors with Lize road to the north.

Margulies Perruzzi completes Thomson Place retail activation project

Dating to the early part of the 20th century, the Thomson Place neighborhood was a booming industrial area of brick and beam warehouse buildings. Margulies Perruzzi’s design restored the building façades by opening bricked-up windows, reintroducing shutters on the upper level, and adding back long-forgotten architectural flourishes. The overall master plan respects the different proportions and architectural language of each building, and focuses activity on the new multi-use plaza adjacent to the buildings at 44 and 50 Thomson Place.

W. R. MEADOWS on campus at the University of Arizona

The University of Arizona Bioscience Research was designed by ZGF Architects and BWS Architects, and the general contractor was DPR Construction. “An air barrier and numerous waterproofing products were needed for this project, “states Greg Neundorfer, the W. R. MEADOWS salesperson in charge of this project. “There were also multiple transitions between these products that needed to be addressed.” Products used in this project had a tall order to meet; they had to work well with a variety of substrates. The blindside product chosen was PRECON®, the positive-side below-grade was MEL-ROL™, the hot-applied material was HRM 714, and the cold-applied material was HYDRALASTIC™ 836.

BIA extends deadline for 2019 Brick in Architecture Awards

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has extended the deadline for entries to November 7. Eligible projects include any work of architecture completed since January 1, 2014 in which new clay brick products comprise the predominant exterior building or paving material (over 50 percent) including: face or hollow brick, building brick, thin brick, paving brick, glazed brick, structural glazed facing tile, new clay brick products in special shapes and/or a combination of any of these aforementioned units.

The LEGO Group opens new campus in Billund, Denmark

The LEGO Group’s new, state-of-the-art campus, designed by C.F. Møller Architects, will span 54,000 square meters and house more than 2,000 employees when it is finished in 2021. Sustainability is a core tenet for the LEGO Group, referred to as the “Planet Promise.” For example, the rooftops of the new buildings are covered with Sedum plants which absorb water and CO2, and rainwater will be used to irrigate the green parks in the campus area.
